The Journey of Motherhood: How Hair Connects Us All

The Journey of Motherhood: How Hair Connects Us All

Our founder Mara Roszak on motherhood, change, and the pro hair tips to support you on the journey.

Q: Why do you think we’re so emotionally attached to our hair?

Mara: Hair is such an integral part of our identity: it’s the first thing people really see or notice about us—it’s a recognizable and distinct characteristic that makes us feel like ourselves. It’s also such an individualistic way to express yourself: when we’re going through different seasons of life, it’s the first thing we go to when we’re craving a change, whether it's a major chop, a color, or a new style.

Q: As a mother, what do you hope to teach your kids about hair?

Mara: My own hair texture really changed during puberty—it was a challenge for me but ultimately what led me on my hairstyling path.  My son Elio has beautiful blonde ringlet curls since he was born and even though he’s only in preschool, he’s already noticed the differences between his classmates' hair and his own. He’s told me before that he doesn’t like his hair—it’s heartbreaking to hear our children not like something about themselves that is so beautiful and unique. As a mom, I want to help my kids love and appreciate what makes them different and special, hair included.

Q: How have you experienced changes in your hair through motherhood?

Mara: During my first pregnancy, my hair felt really amazing—it was full, shiny, luscious. After I had Elio, I experienced my first postpartum hair loss. It’s a shock and challenging to go through that, all of the sudden you’re not familiar with your body and your hair. I also experienced so much dryness in my hair postpartum. Willow Glen really became my savior- it’s such a multipurpose nourishing oil that added some much needed hydration back into my skin and hair.

Q: What is the biggest advice you would give to yourself now that you’re a mom of two?

Mara: Being a mom is so many things—beautiful, fulfilling, complicated, exhausting, and exhilarating. It’s been the greatest gift. Mamas can be so hard on themselves, I try to give myself grace. Carving out a few quiet minutes for myself (it’s nearly impossible, I know) but can make such a difference.

Q: For moms dealing with postpartum hair loss and regrowth, what are some ways they can help manage the regrowth phase?

Mara: In the four to six months postpartum, a lot of moms feel like their hair is thinning—especially the sections around the face. Cutting some pieces around the face and blending it really nicely with some invisible, intentional, piecey layers helps conceal the little springs of hair regrowth. It also adds some fullness and dimension back to your hair. A little Evergreen Style Cream is the best tool to help tame frizz and smooth flyaways to conceal those baby hairs.

I also love a little texturizing spray, like our Air Thickening Spray, to help build some extra volume and wave. It really helps make hair feel more nourished and full in times where it feels flat or thinning.

Q: How has your hair routine changed as a mom?

Mara: As a mom in general, you have less time to spend on getting ready—life is so busy. A very simple routine that’s effortless is needed. Investing in good quality products with good-for-you ingredients is key. I do a lot of air drying these days and pairing Milk Hair Serum with Santa Lucia Styling Oil makes my hair so happy.
