How do you choose a hair color?

Start with your current color, the warmth or coolness you like, and the upkeep you can commit to. Compare the depth first: how light or dark the color looks. Then look at the tone, such as warmth from red or gold, or a cooler, ashier finish. A colorist can help you compare those choices against your complexion without treating skin tone as a rule.

If you want to go lighter, ask how much lift, or lightening, your hair would need and whether the change should be planned across appointments. Share your color history before agreeing on a result. Ask how the shade is likely to fade, how noticeable your roots might be, and what touch-ups would involve.

What should you bring to a color consultation?

Bring reference photos, your color history and a clear idea of how often you want salon visits. Include at-home dye, previous lightening and any other chemical services, even if they were a while ago.

Point to what you like in each photo: the overall depth, the warmth, or where the lighter pieces sit. Show anything you want to avoid, too. Ask your colorist to separate what is achievable at the next appointment from what may take more sessions. Before booking, agree on the intended result, the upkeep and the cost of the proposed service.

Common questions

Can a reference photo show exactly how a color will look on me?

No. Lighting, camera settings and screens can change how hair color appears. Use a photo to discuss depth, tone and placement; your colorist can assess what is realistic for your starting color and color history.

What is the difference between hair color depth and tone?

Depth describes how light or dark a hair color is. Tone describes its color character, such as golden, reddish or ashy. When saving a reference photo, note whether you like its depth, its tone or both.

How do I find hair color ideas with less upkeep?

Compare the roots in a reference photo with your natural color, then ask a colorist about grow-out and fading. Agree on a salon schedule before choosing the shade; a photo alone cannot tell you its maintenance needs.

Can I book the colorist whose work I like?

Each gallery photo credits its colorist by name and links to their profile. Most photos also include a booking link. Follow it to check availability and arrange a consultation directly with the colorist. If there is no booking link, follow the Instagram profile link to ask how to book.
