How to add volume to fine hair, step by step

  1. 1Wash for lift

Wash with Foundation Shampoo. Once a week, swap in Salt Scalp Scrub to clear buildup at the roots.

  2. 2Condition the ends only

Keep Foundation Conditioner on your mid-lengths and ends, away from the roots.

  3. 3Lift, then dry upside down

Spray Root Lift on damp roots and mist Air from roots to ends. Then rough-dry with your head upside down. Hair holds the shape it dries in, so roots that dry lifted stay lifted.

  4. 4Stretch it to day two

Mist Air through dry hair and fluff it with your fingers. Or scrunch in Wave, which adds grip on dry hair so the shape lasts.

Want all three stylers? The Texture Trio has Root Lift, Air and Wave together.

How stylists add volume to fine hair

On step 1 · Wash

“Fine hair needs a gentle cleanse, and nothing too heavy out of the shower.”

Isabella SementilliHairstylist, Mare Salon, Los AngelesWritten Q&A, October 2026

On step 2 · Condition

“Shampoo fine hair slightly more regularly as it is prone to more grease. Every other day is great. Use conditioner only on your ends.”

Mara RoszakHairstylist and Founder of RŌZRŌZ Stylist Tips by Hair Type, October 2026

On step 3 · Lift

“… I hit the roots with a solid thickening spray for maximum volume …”

On step 4 · Day two

“Fine hair gets weighed down fast, so light products and more frequent wash days, or keep a solid dry shampoo and/or a trusty salt spray in your rotation to stretch out the good hair days!”

Fine hair questions

Why does fine hair go flat?

Usually it's weight. Conditioner near the roots, a rich leave-in, or a couple of days of oil and product is enough to pull fine strands down. Washing a bit more often and keeping conditioner on the ends takes care of most of it.

Which volumizing product should I use for fine hair?

Start with where it's flat. If it's the roots, spray Root Lift on damp roots before you blow-dry. If the whole length looks thin, mist Air Thickening Spray through damp or dry hair. Plenty of people use both.

Will volume products weigh fine hair down?

They shouldn't if you start with a few sprays and keep heavier products off your roots. In testing, 96% said Root Lift didn't leave their hair or roots sticky.*

How do I get volume back on day two?

Mist a little Air through dry hair and fluff it with your fingers, or scrunch in Wave for grip. If your roots are very flat, dampen them, add Root Lift and blow-dry them again.
