Products for Frizzy Hair

Frizz is usually dry or roughed-up hair reacting to humid air. A leave-in on wet hair does most of the work. Add a styler or a little oil if you need more.

How to reduce frizz, step by step

  1. 1Condition every wash

Use Foundation Conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends every time you wash. It smooths, hydrates and detangles.

  2. 2Leave-in on wet hair

Work Milk Hair Serum through damp hair: one to two pumps for fine hair, two to four for thick hair.

  3. 3Style, then hands off

On humid or air-dry days, scrunch in Milk Styling Mousse. For a sleeker look, use Evergreen Style Cream. Then leave it alone until it's dry; touching it while it dries breaks up the shape.

  4. 4Smooth the ends last

Finish with one to two pumps of Santa Lucia Styling Oil on the mid-lengths and ends, or one if your hair is fine. Oil doesn't add moisture, so it goes on after the leave-in.

Mara and Lorne on frizz

On step 2 · Leave-in

“With curls, especially frizz-prone ones, which is most of them, you need to apply product while the hair is still fairly wet. Not dripping, but holding plenty of water.”

On step 3 · Style

“Solving this doesn't mean having to use heavy products or harsh stylers, it's more about finding the right products that seal and lock in style at the appropriate weight for your hair type, to be able to withstand humidity without weighing your hair down.”

The next morning

“In the morning, if I need to, I mist just the spots that got flattened or frizzy overnight, then put product back on while it's still damp.”

Frizz questions

Does a leave-in conditioner help frizzy hair?

Yes, and it's the place to start, because hair that dries without enough moisture dries frizzier. Milk Hair Serum is our leave-in: one to two pumps on damp fine hair, two to four on thick hair. In an independent consumer panel of 80 women, 96% experienced softer hair.

Hair serum or hair oil for frizz?

They do different jobs. Milk Hair Serum is a leave-in that adds moisture to damp hair. Santa Lucia Styling Oil smooths the surface but doesn't add moisture, so it goes on last: one to two pumps on the mid-lengths and ends. If your hair is dry and frizzy, use both.

Mousse or cream for frizzy hair?

It depends on your texture. Milk Styling Mousse is for waves that puff out in humid weather; scrunch it into damp hair. Based on an instrumental study, it reduces frizz by 88% after 24 hours in high humidity. Evergreen Style Cream suits loose curls and sleek styles, works on damp or dry hair, and has a light-medium hold.

What order do frizz products go on?

Leave-in first, on damp hair. Then a styler: mousse for waves, cream for curls or a sleek look. Oil goes on last, on the mid-lengths and ends.

Why is my hair so frizzy?

Dry or damaged lengths take on moisture from humid air and swell, and that's the puff you see. It's why frizz gets worse on muggy days. The routine above is the place to start.

How do I stop my hair frizzing when it air-dries?

Blot with a T-shirt instead of a towel, and get Milk Hair Serum in while your hair is still wet. On humid days, scrunch in Milk Styling Mousse too. The hard part is not touching it until it's dry.

What's the best anti-frizz product for fine hair?

Start with one pump of Milk Hair Serum on damp mid-lengths and ends, and keep it off your roots. You can add a second pump, but it's easier to add product than to wash it out.
