Curly Bob
A curly bob is a bob haircut shaped around natural curls, usually landing between the chin and the shoulders once dry. It's cut for a rounded, balanced outline rather than a triangle shape that's flat on top and wide at the ends.
What is a curly bob?
A curly bob is a short haircut, usually between the chin and the shoulders, that’s cut to work with your curls instead of against them. Most curly bobs aim for a rounded outline, with fullness spread evenly instead of piling up at the bottom.
The length that matters is the dry length. Curls shrink, meaning they spring up shorter as they dry, so a cut that looks shoulder-length wet can sit near the jaw once dry.
Curly bob vs. curly lob
| Curly bob | Curly lob | |
|---|---|---|
| Dry length | Chin to just above the shoulders | Shoulders to collarbone |
| Shape | Rounded and compact | Longer, with more weight at the ends |
| Good for | A bold change and less hair to dry | Easing into shorter hair, keeping a ponytail |
A lob is simply a long bob. Because curls shrink by different amounts, compare where each photo lands dry rather than the name of the cut.
Who is a curly bob best for?
A curly bob can work on most curl types, from loose waves to tight coils, as long as the shape is planned around your curls. The photos above range from defined spirals to a short, coily cut.
It may not be the right pick if:
- You want to wear your hair up most days. A short bob won’t reach a full ponytail.
- You’re not ready for the first few weeks of a new shape. Short curls can look bigger before they settle.
- You switch between straight and curly often. A bob cut for curls can look uneven when blow-dried straight. Tell your stylist if you do both.
Should a curly bob be layered?
Usually, some layers help. Layers are sections cut to different lengths. On a curly bob, they take weight out of the bottom so the shape doesn’t turn into a triangle. Thick or tight curls often need more layering. If your hair is fine or thin at the ends, ask for fewer layers so the bottom still looks full.
Short curly bob or longer curly bob?
A short curly bob sits around the chin and shows off your face and curl pattern. A longer one, near the shoulders, gives you more length to play with and grows out more easily. Several photos here show both: a compact chin-length bob and a rounded cut just above the shoulders.
Curly bob with bangs
A curly fringe pairs naturally with a bob, as in the chin-length example in the gallery. The bangs blend into the rounded outline. For more ideas, see our textured fringe and bangs guide.
How to style a curly bob
- Apply your usual curl products to wet hair, using a little less than on longer hair.
- Scrunch the curls upward with your hands to help them form.
- Air-dry or use a diffuser (a dryer attachment that spreads out the airflow) on low.
- Once fully dry, lift the roots with your fingers and shake the curls out gently.
Ask your stylist to style it the way you’ll actually wear it at home, so you can judge the cut in that finish.
How much maintenance does a curly bob need?
Less drying time than long hair, but more regular shaping. A short shape shows growth sooner, especially around the face and the back of the neck. Book a reshape when the outline stops sitting the way you like, rather than on a fixed schedule. If you plan to grow it out, tell your stylist so they can shape it with that in mind.
What to ask your stylist for
Bring photos from the front and the side, on curls close to yours. Then try something like:
“I’d like a curly bob that sits around my [chin / shoulders] once my curls are dry, with the fullness around my face rather than at the bottom. I usually [air-dry / diffuse]. How short will it look after shrinkage?”
Ask where the shortest layer will sit before the cutting starts.
How we choose these photos
Every photo is client work from a working stylist, taken after the cut was finished, with no stock or AI images. We picked frames that show the shape on dry curls. Two photos are cropped to remove on-screen text. Each stylist is credited by name with a link to their Instagram, and each photo is shared with the stylist’s permission. Common questions
Which bob haircut is best for curly hair?
A rounded bob with some layering usually works best, because it spreads fullness evenly instead of piling it at the ends. The right length depends on how much your curls shrink.
Can you wear a curly bob straight sometimes?
Yes, but tell your stylist first. The outline and layers can look different when blow-dried straight, so ask how the shape will work in both finishes.
Does a curly bob have to be cut dry?
No. Many curly stylists cut dry to see how each curl sits, and others cut wet and check the shape dry. What matters is agreeing on the finished dry length.
Will my curls shrink shorter than expected after a bob?
They might, which is why the length should be planned dry. Curls spring up as they dry, sometimes a lot. Ask your stylist to cut or check the length with your curls dry, and start a little longer if you’re unsure.
Can you get a curly bob with fine or thin curls?
Yes. Ask for fewer layers so the ends keep their weight, and a length closer to the chin often looks fuller than a longer bob. Your stylist can check your density (how many hairs you have) before cutting.
Does a curly bob work on coily hair?
Yes. Coily hair shrinks the most, so a coily bob is often cut and shaped dry into a rounded outline, like the short coily example in the gallery. Bring a reference with a similar coil pattern.
