About Angela

Angela Soto is a hairstylist and colorist who specializes in curly and textured hair. She owns Baja Studio, a boutique salon in SoHo, New York, which she opened in 2019. At the salon her focus is curly and textured hair, smoothing keratin treatments and balayage. Angela has worked with curly hair for 25 years and has very curly hair herself. In the chair she maps the different curl patterns across a client's head, often more than two or three, and notes where there is more density, more shrinkage or looser curls. When she cuts, she takes extra care with tight curls at the hairline and nape, where a little length can shrink up a lot.

In Angela's words

When styling I’ll advise my client to smooth the hairline with a fine tooth comb after product application and pin with covered clips to set. Once dry you can shake the area out but this helps stretch the area and keep it more defined over the coming days.

You will get added volume using a diffuser but risk more frizz as any forceful air disrupts the cuticle.

A high loose ponytail with a silk scrunchie is great and easy if you have a tighter curl pattern that doesn’t disrupt so easily when stretched.

Curls should always be very wet. They don’t need to be soaking wet but they should not be damp. A gentle wring out of water after wash then immediately apply product.
