About Joel

Joel Mowen is a hair colorist at Marie Robinson Salon in New York City, with more than fifteen years of experience. He discovered his passion for beauty and fashion as a teenager in central Pennsylvania, trained in French techniques at Frédéric Fekkai, and then refined his craft under Marie Robinson. His signature is sun-kissed balayage, and he works across espresso brunettes, copper reds and soft blondes. He also designs hair color looks for film and television, and British Vogue has described him as Sienna Miller's colourist. For RŌZ, he shares practical color-care advice: wait at least 48 hours to wash after highlights, a single process or a gloss, wash less often but never longer than your scalp finds comfortable, and keep in mind that sun, salt water, heat styling and mineral buildup can all fade color or shift its tone.

In Joel's words

'Sulfate-free' doesn't automatically mean gentle; the other surfactants and the shampoo's pH are equally important.

From Are Sulfates Bad for Your Hair?

Sun, salt water, frequent washing, heat styling and mineral buildup can all cause color to fade or shift in tone.

From Does clarifying shampoo strip color? When to use it

I recommend waiting at least 48 hours after highlights, a single process or a gloss. Color technology has evolved tremendously, but leaving freshly deposited tone undisturbed for the first couple of days can still help preserve it.

From When to Wash Hair After Color or Highlights: 48 Hours?

Water alone contributes to fading, so washing less frequently generally keeps color richer for longer. However, don't force your scalp to go longer than is comfortable.
