Curly Bangs
Curly bangs, or a curly fringe, are bangs cut to be worn in their natural curl instead of blow-dried straight. They're cut at the length they sit when dry, so they land around the brows without shrinking up too short.
What are curly bangs?
Curly bangs are a fringe (shorter hair cut to fall over the forehead) that you wear curly. “Curly” describes the texture. The shape can vary: a full fringe straight across, a lighter one with gaps between the curls, or a curtain shape that parts in the middle and falls to each side.
The main difference from straight bangs is shrinkage, meaning curls spring up shorter as they dry. A curly fringe is planned around where the curls land dry, not how long they look wet or pulled straight.
Are bangs good for curly hair?
Yes, curly hair can work well with bangs, and the photos above run from loose curls to tight coils. Curls tend to hide small unevenness in a fringe, and they add height and movement at the front.
They may not be the best fit if:
- You need your hair off your face most days. Short curls won’t all stay pinned back.
- Your front curls behave very differently from the rest of your hair. A stylist can check how they sit dry before cutting.
- You don’t want to refresh the front between wash days. Bangs show flat or frizzy curls first.
Curly bangs styles: full, wispy, curtain and side-swept
| Shape | What it looks like | Works well if you want |
|---|---|---|
| Full curly fringe | Curls across the whole forehead, often at the brows | A bold, rounded shape |
| Wispy curly bangs | Lighter curls with small gaps between them | Softer coverage that’s easier to grow out |
| Curly curtain bangs | Parted in the middle, longer at the sides | Less commitment and an easy blend into layers |
| Side-swept curly fringe | Curls falling more to one side | Something that follows a natural part or cowlick |
A cowlick is a patch of hair near the hairline that grows in its own direction. If you have one, show your stylist before choosing the shape.
Curly bangs on wavy, curly and coily hair
On wavy hair, bangs often look softer and can be styled straight or wavy. On curly hair, the fringe usually reads as separate spirals at the brow. On coily hair (tight coils that shrink the most), a fringe can sit much shorter dry than it looks wet, so it’s often cut longer or cut dry to check the length.
Bring a reference photo with a curl pattern close to yours. A fringe on loose curls won’t look the same on tight coils, even when it’s cut the same way.
Curly bangs with long or short hair
With long curly hair, bangs bring the shape up toward your face so the length doesn’t do all the work. Several photos here pair a curly fringe with long spirals or a curly shag (a choppy, layered cut).
With short curly hair or a curly bob, the fringe blends into a rounded outline, as in the shorter, coily examples in the gallery. For more fringe ideas, see our textured fringe and bangs guide.
How to style curly bangs
- Style your bangs while they’re wet, with the same products you use on the rest of your curls, just less of them.
- Let the curls fall the way they want to go, then shape a few pieces with your fingers.
- Let them air-dry or use a diffuser (a dryer attachment that spreads out the airflow) on low.
- Once fully dry, gently loosen any stiff curls with your fingers.
Between wash days, you usually only need to refresh the front. Wet the bangs lightly with a spray bottle, reshape them and let them dry.
How are curly bangs cut?
Many curly stylists cut bangs dry, curl by curl, so they can see exactly where each curl lands. Others cut wet and check the length once it’s dry. The method matters less than agreeing on the finished dry length before the first cut. Start longer: it’s easy to take more off and hard to wait for curls to grow back.
How often do curly bangs need a trim?
Bangs need a trim when the dry curls start to sit in your eyes or lose their shape. How often depends on how short they start and how fast your hair grows. Ask your stylist if they offer a quick fringe trim between full haircuts, and check the length fully dry before taking more off.
What to ask your stylist for
Bring two or three photos of bangs on curls like yours, and point out what you like: how much forehead they cover, the part or the length. Then try something like:
“I want to wear my bangs curly, not blow-dry them straight. Can we start a little longer and check where they sit once they’re dry? I usually [air-dry / diffuse] my hair.”
Also mention how often you tie your hair back and how much time you want to spend on the front each morning.
How we choose these photos

Common questions
Are curly bangs the same as curtain bangs?
Not always. Curtain bangs part in the middle and get longer toward the sides. Curly describes the texture. A curly fringe can have a curtain shape or cover more of the forehead.
Do bangs make curly hair look bigger?
They add height and volume at the front, so the whole shape can look fuller. If you want a flatter outline, ask for a lighter or curtain-style fringe.
How do you grow out curly bangs?
As they get longer, your stylist can blend the sides into face-framing curls, which are shorter curls that fall around the face. Clips or a curtain part help while they grow. How long it takes depends on how short they started.
Which bangs suit curly hair?
Most shapes can work on curls. A full curly fringe gives the boldest look, wispy bangs are softer and easier to grow out, and curly curtain bangs are the lowest commitment. Bring a photo on curls like yours.
Can you wear curly bangs straight?
You can blow-dry them straight, but a fringe cut for curls is usually longer than it looks curly, so it may sit lower when straightened. Tell your stylist if you plan to switch between the two.
Do curly bangs suit a round face?
They can. Longer, curtain-style or side-swept curly bangs that open in the middle show more of the face, while a short, full fringe adds width at the brows. Ask your stylist which length balances your features.
