Hydrating Products for Dry Hair

If your hair feels rough, looks dull or tangles easily, it's probably low on moisture. Conditioner every wash is the base. Add a leave-in or a mask when that isn't enough.

How to hydrate dry hair, step by step

  1. 1Oil the lengths before you wash

Work Willow Glen through dry lengths before you shower, then wash as usual. It softens the lengths before shampoo gets to them.

  2. 2Shampoo the scalp, not the lengths

Massage Foundation Shampoo into your scalp only. The suds that run down when you rinse are enough for the lengths.

  3. 3Condition every wash

Foundation Conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends. On mask days, use Foundation Mask instead and leave it on 5–10 minutes if your hair is thick.

  4. 4Leave-in, then the ends

Work Milk Hair Serum through towel-dried hair. If your ends still feel rough, finish with one to two pumps of Santa Lucia.

What stylists see with dry hair

Where to start

“My first change is usually adding moisture back into the routine and, if needed, washing and conditioning more regularly, while cutting back on heat and being mindful of chemical services.”

Meg TitusSalon Owner and Hair Artist, Westfolk SalonWritten Q&A, October 2026

On step 2 · Wash

“Dry hair is rarely a simple fix. There's almost always more than one factor! … most of the time i find it starts with the foundation of the outward hair health, a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.”

Nichole KrepsHairdresser, SHED Salon (Oakland) and DEEDA Salon (Sacramento)Written Q&A, October 2026

On step 3 · Condition

“Plan on detangling in the shower with a brush while the conditioner is in the hair, then rinse thoroughly.”

Dry hair questions

Why is my hair so dry?

Usually something in your routine takes moisture out faster than you put it back. Hot water, shampoo on the lengths, heat styling, and color or bleach are the common ones. Weather and hard water add to it. If it changed suddenly, ask your stylist or doctor. More in Why is my hair so dry?

What are the best hydrating products for dry hair?

A shampoo that doesn't strip and a conditioner every wash, plus one treatment matched to how dry your hair is. Here that's Foundation Shampoo and Conditioner, Foundation Mask on mask days, and Milk Hair Serum after washing.

Is dry hair the same as damaged hair?

Not always. Dry hair is low on moisture and responds to hydration. Damage is a change to the hair itself, and it often shows as breakage or split ends.

Will hydrating products make my hair greasy?

Not if you keep them away from your roots. Conditioner and oil go on the mid-lengths and ends; your scalp only needs shampoo.
